Winchester Royals claim 14th VBL title in extra innings

The Winchester Royals defeated the Charlottesville Tom Sox 5-4 last night to secure their first Valley Baseball League championship since 2004.

The game spanned nearly five hours and concluded in the bottom of the 16th inning when Shenandoah University’s JP Williams hit a 3 run walk-off home run.

Winchester led the majority of the game and took a 2-0 lead into the 9th inning before Charlottesville began to rally, scoring 2 runs with 2 outs on the board.

The game then remained scoreless until the 16th when Charlottesville took a 4-2 lead due to a fielding error.

Williams’ home run for the Royals was their first base hit since the 5th inning and Winchester was out hit throughout the ball game, 16-3.

Royals pitchers Blaine Griffin, Tyler Oaks, and Jackson Walsh pitched out of jams effectively all night and stranded 14 Charlottesville baserunners.

Lucas Marrero was credited with the win.

The Royals were led by Manager Brian Burke and it is his first VBL Championship as the head ball coach.

Winchester’s 14th Lineweaver Cup places them a top the all time VBL standings and breaks the tie with Harrisonburg at 13.

VBL All Star Game in Front Royal

The Valley Baseball League All Star Game will be held on Sunday at Bing Crosby Stadium in Front Royal.

The All Star Game festivities had previously been held at Veterans Memorial Park in Harrisonburg.

The town will welcome fans from around the area and college baseball players from around the country for the game and contests.

The Front Royal Cardinals will be represented by Bryce Fisher, Sean Means, Drew Camp, and Trent Jeffcoat.

Jo Jo Jackson will participate in the Home Run Derby as well as the All Star Game.

The first event is a 60 yard dash contest starting at 2:30.

Next is batting practice from 3:00-4:30 followed by the Home Run Derby at 5:00.

An autograph session will be hosted after the Derby.

Before first pitch at 6:55 pm, the Valley Baseball League’s Hall of Fame class of 2022 will be recognized.

Light pole falls on Bridgeforth Field

As a result of the storms on Wednesday, a wooden light pole fell onto a fence at the newly renovated Bridgeforth Field.

The pole fell on the third base side of the field and missed the batting cages that were a part of those renovations.

The issue forced the Royals to swap Thursday’s home game and a future home game with the Purcellville Cannons.

Saturday’s game against the Front Royal Cardinals was moved up from 7 pm to 5 pm.

All future home games expected to start at an earlier time until the light pole is fixed.

Little League Night at the Bing

The Front Royal Cardinals are hosting Little League Night this evening at Bing Crosby Stadium.

Gate open at 5:30 with activities and vendors ready to roll until first pitch at 7 pm.

Admission is free thanks to Green to Ground Electrical Services and is a great way to support the Cardinals and Front Royal Little League.

Little Leaguers are encouraged to wear their uniforms and will get to run on the field with the players before the game.

The Cardinals enter the game with a 5-6 record on the season and face the Woodstock River Bandits who are off to a decent start at 8-5.
