Virginia State Police are investigating a fatal hang glider crash that occurred Thursday afternoon in Shenandoah County.

The pilot during the crash was Ward Odenwald, 71, of Woodbine, Maryland.

It is believed the hang-glider lost control and then crashed into a tree before coming to the ground near the intersection of Woodstock Tower Road and Burnshire Lane.

His remains were transported to the Medical Examiner’s Office in Manassas for an autopsy.

Odenwald was the only occupant of the glider and no one else was on the ground near the crash.
