The Duke’s Hoops Preview: Warren County vs Skyline

Warren County (4-8) hosts Skyline (8-4) in the first of two regular season meetings in tonight’s High School Basketball Game of the Week on Fox Sports Radio 1450 WFTR, theriver953.com, and the Tune In Radio App.

While their classmates were on break, both team’s competed in holiday tournaments.

Skyline returned to the Ram Hardwood Classic in Strasburg as the reigning champions but took home a third place finish this season.

The Hawks secured wins against Central and Strasburg while falling to Buchannon-Upshur (WV).

Dwayne Tucker was named to the All Tournament Team and had some dominant performances in the paint including a 14 point and 14 rebound performance against Strasburg.

Head Coach Harold Chunn’s group has yet to play their best basketball, but has begun to find their way after winning five of the last six.

In that stretch, Skyline has averaged just over 70 points per game while allowing just 54.8 points per game.

Warren County has already eclipsed last season’s win total with over half the season remaining.

After starting hot with back to back wins, the Wildcats have stumbled and enter tonight on a four game losing streak spanning the Briar Woods Holiday Tournament and the contest against Fauquier.

When looking back through some of those losses, one quarter usually stands out as an outlier that dooms the Wildcats:

  • Vs Essex- A 6 point first period set back Warren County.
  • Vs Fauquier- Warren County totaled just 4 points in the second quarter.
  • Vs Luray- Warren County scored 7 points in a tightly contested 4th quarter.

Head Coach TJ Atlee’s group has improved tremendously in his second year, but they need to find ways to put together a full four quarters to turn the corner.

Skyline has not lost to Warren County in boys basketball since 2019 and last year saw the Hawks win both games by a combined score of 166-75.

If the Wildcats can weather an early storm and stay composed against Skyline’s defensive pressure, this game could be a lot closer than previous iterations.

Skyline appears to still have too much fire power and experience which should allow them to secure the win and pull away in the second half, 75-58.
