The Town of Front Royal loses a Pillar of the Community

The Town of Front Royal reports the loss of a Pillar of the Community and former mayor.

John K. Marlow passed away Sunday, February 4, 2024.

His passing is less than a month after John and his wife Joyce Marlow were honored as Stars of the Community.

The couple was honored by the Community Foundation of the Northern Shenandoah Valley.

The couple were honored for their commitment and involvement in their community.

Marlow served as mayor of Front Royal from 1982-1990.

Mayor Marlow was instrumental in spear heading the downtown redevelopment of Main Street.

That included the renovation of the former train station into what has become the visitor’s center.

He was also instrumental in the installation of the Gazebo among other projects and innovations.

For those achievements Mayor Marlow and the town of Front Royal received the Virginia Municipal League’s Achievement Award for outstanding community development.

Marlow continued his involvement with the community and those that serve well after his tenure as mayor.

Current Mayor Lori A. Cockrell remarked that Marlow once told her that when he voted on anything as Mayor, he would always first ask what is best for Front Royal.

He told Cockrell after any vote he would always want to wake in the morning look in the mirror and know he did the right thing.
