Lonnie's Fun Fact for Tuesday April 13, 2021. Tool time Tuesday and today we're getting hammered! Not with just any hammer though, today it's a ball peen hammer. The ball peen hammer was invented by a French metal worker named Jaques Balpien. To "peen" means to bend, shape or flatten material, in particular metals. The flat side of the hammer is used to hit chisels or punches while the ball-shaped head of this hammer is designed for peening. Other uses of the peen is to flatten rivets, round corners or shape gasket materials. Other types of peening hammers have different shaped heads for other metal work.
