Town Council Meets, Announces Vacancy
December 9, 2019
FRONT ROYAL – The Front Royal Town Council put out a notice seeking applications to fill a vacancy.
Following the election of Eugene Tewalt to Mayor of Front Royal, his position on the Town Council has opened up. The Council put out a request online for local residents to submit resumes, if they are interested in filling the vacancy. There are five other qualifications to be met to submit a resume. Each applicant must have qualified to vote in Virginia during the last election, been a resident of VA for a year prior to the Nov. elections, been a resident of Front Royal for at least 30 days, be qualified to vote for Town Council and file an initial statement of economic interests with the Clerk of Council. The statement should be submitted with any resume.
The Council will also meet tonight for a regularly scheduled meeting. Several important topics will be discussed including an ongoing conversation regarding a water/sewer rate study. The study would cost the Town $45,000, which Town Manager Matt Tederick confirmed was in the budget during the Council’s last work session. The goal behind any potential study would be to lower rates for local citizens.
Councilmembers will also vote to approve or deny a resolution to the Virginia General Assembly. Several members, including Mayor Tewalt, expressed interest in asking the General Assembly if the Town can split from the Front Royal/Warren County Economic Development Authority and create its own separate entity. According to Town Attorney Doug Napier, such a request would have to be made of the Assembly, because state code allows only one EDA per locality. Since the town opted into a joint EDA with Warren County, it is not allowed to form its own.
The meeting takes place tonight at 7 pm in the Warren County Government Center.
