Tractor Trailer Collides with Bridge Pillar on 81
October 9, 2019
SHENANDOAH COUNTY – The Virginia State Police are investigating a single vehicle crash that shut down Interstate 81 yesterday.
Chheanrem R. Chhean was traveling north on I-81 early Tuesday morning. Chhean was handling a 2020 Freightliner tractor trailer. He lost control of the vehicle, ran off the roadway to the left, struck a guardrail, ran up the embankment and finally collided with a bridge pillar. The crash took place just outside mile marker 296.
Chhean died at the scene as a result of his injuries. The crash and tractor trailer wreckage shut down a large portion of I-81. The Virginia Department of Transportation cleaned debris off the roadway to the best of their abilities. I-81 was reopened fully just before 9 a.m Tuesday morning. Overnight crews will work to clear off the last of the wreckage from the side of the roadway. Drivers should use caution when driving through the area near mile marker 296.
