VA. Department of Forestry conducts a controlled burn

According to a Shenandoah County Sheriff’s Office announcement a controlled or prescribed burn is being conducted today.

The burn will be conducted in the Fort Valley area so smoke maybe visible in some areas in Shenandoah County.

Approximately 600 acres will be purposely burnt in the area.

These burns are conducted by the Department of Forestry (DOF) to help control fuel that can cause more destructive fires in the future.

Controlled burns are preformed to help preserve endangered species of plants and animals in the area being burned.

A prescribed burn is controlled by trained and qualified fire personnel from the DOF.
