STAUNTON, Va. – Virginia Department of Transportation officials in Staunton have announced they have been awarded a grant to study a portion of Route 55 in Warren County east of the Town of Front Royal.
The Strategically Targeted Affordable Roadway Solutions (STARS) grant is valued at $220,000 and will focus on Route 55 from the Front Royal Corporate Limits to 1.82 miles east. VDOT says they will evaluate reducing hills and curves and widening the road to four lanes.
The results of the study will be provided to Warren County officials to help strengthen their application for potential State funding for improvements to that roadway.
The study will use the County’s Comprehensive Plan and include input from citizens, local officials and local business interests. Meetings and displays will be available for citizen comment as plans are developed.
Officials say the proposed work will increase roadway safety, improve driver visibility, and improve drainage.
In mid April two charter buses returning Warren County 4th graders from a field trip to Washington D.C. were involved in an accident on the same stretch of roadway to be included in that study.
