VDOT Will Recommend Widening 81 in Frederick Co.

3 December 2018 Winchester Frederick County News

The Virginia Department of Transportation said Friday that it will recommend widening a portion of I-81 in Frederick County to the Commonwealth Transportation Board.

The CTB’s workshop meeting is set to take place in Richmond on Tuesday, and VDOT I-81 project manager Ben Mannell was quoted as saying that VDOT will recommend adding a lane in each direction between Exit 313 and Exit 317. This decision comes after VDOT faced backlash when it excluded such improvements from its list of upcoming I-81 projects for budgetary reasons, despite identifying them as an immediate need. If the CTB approves these improvements on Wednesday, VDOT will present them as part of the entire I-81 improvement plan on the first day of Virginia’s General Assembly.
