Virginia to Host National Experts on Driver Distraction and Traffic Safety

14 September 2017 News

According to the Virginia Highway Safety Office, traffic fatalities in Virginia are currently trending at 11% higher than this time last year*. Distraction has been identified as a significant causative factor in many crashes. Now more than ever, DRIVE SMART Virginia’s Distracted Driving Summit is critically important to the safety and well-being of those traveling our roadways.

More than 40 traffic safety experts from around the country will be on hand to discuss recent research and promising solutions to distracted driving at the 5th Annual Distracted Driving Summit. The Summit will be held September 28-29 at the Norfolk Waterside Marriott.  Anyone who is interested in traffic safety is encouraged to attend the event.  Featured speakers include David Zuby of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and Virginia State Police Superintendent Colonel W. Steven Flaherty. Speakers from across the country will be on hand to discuss a comprehensive approach to distracted driving.

Executive Director of DRIVE SMART Virginia, Janet Brooking, says that distracted driving is fast becoming an epidemic. “Distracted driving is considered anything that takes your eyes and/or mind off the task of driving. The goal of this event is to bring together industry leaders, researchers, educators, and law enforcement to share ideas, gather information, learn about best practices and forge solutions for distracted driving. We want all attendees to be able to return to their communities with fresh ideas and reasonable solutions for the distracted driving issues in their area,” Brooking said.

The 5th Annual Distracted Driving Summit will include breakout sessions covering all aspects of distracted driving and related issues such as drowsy driving, creating a safety culture, and high risk drivers.

Registration (with breakfast) begins at 7:30 the morning of Thursday, September 28th.  Lunch is provided. The final session on Thursday ends at 4:30 p.m.

On Friday, September 29th, the Summit continues with breakfast and exhibits at 7:30 a.m. The Summit ends at 12:30 p.m.

Dozens of exhibitors will be on-site.  Sponsors include Allstate, State Farm, Abra Auto Body & Glass, Columbia Gas of Virginia, USAA, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, the Virginia Automobile Dealers Association, and Virginia Farm Bureau.  This year’s Diamond Sponsor is GEICO.
