Virginia will remove statue of Berryville resident

Virginia Gov. Northam made it official Friday signing into law a bill permitting the removal of a statue of Berryville resident Harry F. Byrd Sr..

The bill’s sponsor Delegate Jay Jones, directs the Department of General Services to remove the statue of Harry Byrd, Sr. from Capitol Square.

The former Virginia governor and longtime United States senator was an avid segregationist and the architect of “massive resistance,” a campaign to prevent public school desegregation in Virginia.”The former governor and U. S. senator was an avid segregationist.”

The Department of General Services will store the statue starting July 1 after it is removed from Capitol square in Richmond.

The General Assembly will then decide where the statue will go from there.
