Vote Means I-81 Drivers Will Face Tax Hike
After a Wednesday (4/3/2019) vote, drivers along I-81 will now face a gas tax hike.
The measure was proposed by Governor Northam as a means of paying for improvements to the interstate, and the Republican-led General Assembly gave its final approval on Wednesday. The governor had initially pushed for tolls on the highway, but that idea met resistance during the legislative session. The new gas tax, however, received support from the trucking industry and others; the measure will raise prices on gas in the I-81 area by about seven cents a gallon, and will increase truck registration fees as well.
