VSP conducts commercial vehicle inspections

The Virginia State Police (VSP) with the Federal Department of Transportation (FDT) report that they are performing their joint commercial vehicle safety inspections.
Recently in the Sterling area alone 49 vehicles were inspected with 30 of them put out of service.
There were 14 summonses issued and over 269 violations observed by authorities.
These inspections are done to reduce the number of traffic accidents that involve commercial motor vehicles.
On average over 50 percent of inspected vehicles are taken out of service each year for a number of safety defects such as bad tires, suspension and unsecured loads.
The inspections are conducted by the collective law enforcement agencies known as the Motor Carrier Safety Unit.
The control effort goes on throughout the state to help ensure safety on Virginia’s highways.
