Virginia State Police (VSP) report by email the opening of a death investigation by request of the James Madison University (JMU) Police Department.

After a body was discovered in a dormitory early Thursday morning at approximately 2:30 in a Frederickson Hall dorm room the VSP were requested.

The decedent has been identified by student newspaper the Breeze as 19-year-old first year student Bernard Stapelfeld.

Stapelfeld was from Pennsylvania and at this stage the VSP Bureau of Criminal Investigation Culpeper Office have found no sign of foul play in the ongoing investigation.

JMU is offering counseling services for those in need.

Stapelfeld was a member of the school’s Boarderline Ski and Snowboard Club who posted on Instagram their thoughts and sympathies and a chance to talk if need be.
