VSP update the Dec. 17 officer involved shooting in Strasburg

Virginia State Police (VSP) updated by email the investigation of the December 17 officer involved shooting in Strasburg.

The decedent has been identified as 40-year-old Melissa R. Tompkins who has no fixed address.

Thompkins was reportedly involved in a disturbance at the Ramada Inn on Signal Knob Drive.

She was accused of acting erratically, damaging property and threatening people inside the establishment.

When a Strasburg Police Officer arrived he found Tompkins in the parking lot.

Thompkins attacked the officer and gained control of his baton.

The suspect struck the officer in the head and the officer fired his service revolver, striking Thompkins.

Thompkins was transported to Winchester Medical Center where she succumbed to her injury.

The officer was transported to Shenandoah Memorial Hospital where he was treated for minor injuries and released.

No other injuries were reported in the incident which remains under investigation by VSP by request of the Strasburg Police Department.
