VSP update the investigation of a fatale accident involving a pedestrian

Virginia State Police (VSP) report by an email from Public Information Officer Sergeant Brent Coffey the investigation of a pedestrian fatality involving a vehicle.

At approximately 8:10 p.m. Jan. 30 along Interstate 81 at mile marker 311 a 2021 Mazda MX5  traveling north on 81 collided with the pedestrian who was in the left travel lane of the interstate.

The Mazda was unable to avoid the collision and several other vehicles struck the pedestrian after the initial impact.

Richard H. Purltebaugh of Winchester died at the scene of the accident.

Further investigation revealed that Purltebaugh was involved in a single vehicle accident along the 3200 block of Shawnee Drive when he walked away from that accident and ended up walking on Interstate 81.

There were no other injuries reported in the accident.

The northbound lanes of 81 were shutdown for approximately 2 hours during the investigation.

The Virginia Department of Transportation assisted with the road closure and detour.
