Warren Cancels Playoff Football Game
November 14, 2019
FRONT ROYAL – Warren County High School announced that they backed out of their scheduled playoff football game against Goochland High School.
The Region 3B quarterfinal game was set to take place on Friday night at Goochland High School. Instead, the Wildcats will stay home after coaches and administration agreed that it was unsafe for the school to participate in the game. The roster was cut down from 32 players (officially) to 23 players after several students left the team after their last loss to Skyline, 39-8, on Nov. 8.
Several players from the varsity squad made it know that they would not return to practice or play for the team following comments by Head Coach Brian Bush following the regular-season ending loss to the Hawks. The roster was cut in half following the exodus, and several players were called up from the junior varsity team for Monday’s practice to boost the roster to 23 deep. After that practice, Bush and his assistant coaches talked to administration about backing out of the game.
Serious concerns about player safety were raised, and those concerns led to Warren County bowing out from the playoff football game. The Virginia High School League announced that Independence, whose football program started this year, will take the Wildcats place and travel to Goochland for the Friday game.
The Wildcats officially finish the season at 2-8, following a 1-9 record the year prior.
