WCFR with other authorities conclude fatal house fire investigation

Warren County Fire and Rescue (WCFR) Assistant Fire Chief Gerry Maiatico reports by email the conclusion of a 2023 fatal house fire investigation.

Authorities from around the region assisted with the report on the November 24, 2023, house fire that took the life of a Front Royal resident.

When firefighters arrived, they found the home in the 200 block of Blue Ridge Avenue fully involved.

The significance of the fire forced a call for assistance.

During the fire fight crews were told that a person was trapped inside the home.

Firefighters entered the home in an attempt to rescue the victim but were driven out due to the intensity of the fire.

After suppressing the fire, firefighters were able to locate a victim and the scene was turned over to the Fire Marshal’s Office and other authorities.

After intensive investigation by all agencies involved it was determined the victim was the sole occupant and has been identified.

The 72-year-old victim was identified as Linda Watkins.

The fire was determined to be accidental in nature with the improper use of smoking materials as the cause.
