MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Shenandoah University baseball team is the nation’s top ranked squad in the D3baseball.com/NCBWA Top 25 poll released Tuesday morning by the website.
Shenandoah, 14-1 after sweeping Penn St. – Altoona and Mount Aloysius on Sunday in a pair of non-league games, has 595 points and 14 first-place votes in the poll to edge Cortland (N.Y.) State by 27 points for the top spot.
Emory (Ga.), last week’s No. 1 team, drops to No. 3 this week after being swept in a doubleheader at Covenant on Sunday. The Eagles have three first place votes and 550 points to secure the third position.
The Hornets leapfrogged Cortland for No. 1 as the Red Dragons split a doubleheader on Saturday with Castleton (Vt.) State.
This is the first time that Shenandoah has topped the D3baseball.com poll since April 12, 2011, when the Hornets were the nation’s top ranked team for the fourth straight week.
“The recognition of being number one reflects upon the efforts of the players up to this point and is very flattering,” head coach Kevin Anderson said. “The challenge now is to improve in all phases of the game and to meet those challenges on a daily basis.”
Shenandoah is back in action today at 3:00 in a non-league home contest versus Dickinson.
