West Virginia fire takes 5 lives in Hardy County

Mathias West Virginia and Hardy County Authorities report the investigation of a devastating fire that took the lives of 1 adult and 4 children.

The fire was reported Saturday January 5 around 5 a.m. in the Woods Edge Road area.

One woman was able to escape the fire and was transported to a local medical facility.

The ages of the children lost in the blaze ranged from 1 to 5 years of age with the male victim being 28 years of age.

The remains of the victims have been transported to the West Virginia Medical Examiner’s Office for positive identification and exact cause of death.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation with the West Virginia Fire Marshal calling the origin of the fire undetermined due to the severe amount of damage to the structure.

Firefighters did note that there were no working smoke alarms recovered in the debris.
