Winchester Men March in Heels for Laurel Center Fundraiser
16 April 2018 News
On Saturday, April 14th, around one dozen men walked down Loudoun Street Mall in Winchester, each in his own pair of high heels.
This was a part of the third annual Walk a Mile in her Shoes event, a fundraiser organized by The Laurel Center that calls attention to the problem of sexual abuse and harassment by symbolically asking male participants to consider the female perspective. Among the participants was Winchester Sheriff Les Taylor, who was adorned in bright red high-heeled pumps. He expressed his support for the Laurel Center and its cause, and reflected on the abuse he has witnessed both as a child in the home and a member of law enforcement.
The walk began and ended at Brewbaker’s Restaurant, where supporters later gathered for refreshments. It raised a total of $5,000 for the nonprofit organization, which will go towards its mission of providing shelter, safety, and resources for survivors of sexual violence.
