Winchester S.W.A.T. Team Surrounds Home
Winchester residents living on Hillman Drive were given a scare yesterday when a Winchester Police SWAT team surrounded a home there.
The SWAT units assembled at the 600 block of Hillman Drive at 12:40 p.m. on Monday, November 19, 2018, in response to a call that alleged murder; a man told authorities over the phone that he had killed his wife and was barricaded inside his home. When police ordered the homeowner at the address out of his house at gunpoint, handcuffed him, and searched the residence, they discovered that the call had actually been a prank. Authorities discovered that despite his number appearing on the emergency dispatcher’s computer, the homeowner hadn’t made the call and his wife was alive and at work. According to police spokeswoman Lt. Amanda Behan, the homeowners phone had been cloned, and a prankster impersonated him to trigger an armed response from law enforcement. This action is known as “swatting,” and is classified as a misdemeanor. The incident is currently under investigation.
