Winchester School Board Says No to Arming Teachers

13 March 2018 News

All eight of Winchester’s School Board members and the Superintendent agreed at a Monday meeting that they would not support an initiative to arm teachers in the division’s seven schools.

One member was quoted as saying that the issue is about prevention, rather than reaction; board members advocated prioritizing counselor availability and mental health resources in schools instead. More drills and safety protocols were advocated as well, but the board was not sold on adding to the district’s amount of school resource officers; one board member expressed worry that it would create a prison-like atmosphere. Other suggestions included arming front office staff and giving teachers access to pepper spray and training.
