Shenandoah County Assistant Fire Marshal Derrick Dotson confirmed by phone the total loss of a home, animals, and possessions at a Teaberry Road Maurertown house.

The home owned by Jessica and Bradley Cook was the base for Margert Saving Grace Bully Rescue.

The Cooks were awakened by smoke in the home in the early hours of Sunday June 2 and notified authorities.

Shenandoah County Sheriff’s Deputies arrived at 5 a.m.

Deputies had to help the couple out of the home through a second story window because smoke and fire was blocking the front door.

Four dogs perished in the fire, and one was transported to an emergency veterinarian.

Firefighters arrived at approximately 5:05 a.m. and found the front of the home involved.

Units from across Shenandoah County and Middletown responded and had the fire out by approximately 6:30 a.m.

The Cooks were both transported to Shenandoah Memorial Hospital and released that day.

Two Shenandoah County Sheriff’s Deputies were treated for smoke inhalation at the scene.

Fire units remained on the scene until 10:30 a.m.

The Shenandoah County Fire Marshal remained on scene until 6 p.m.

Assistant Fire Marshal Dotson confirmed that the fire started on the front porch and was electrical in origin.

Most likely the fire started from a faulty surge protector according to Dotson.

The community at large is reaching out to support the Cooks along with the American Red Cross.
