Frederick County Public Schools and the Middletown Volunteer Fire and Rescue Company are partnering up to make sure local student meal preparation continues seamlessly during upcoming construction at Middletown Elementary School.
The collaboration will allow use of the fire station’s kitchen facilities as an alternate meal prep site during a five month period starting January 2028 as part of the school’s expansion and renovation project.
Director of School Nutrition Penny Curry toured the facilities and ensured the kitchen set up and equipment met the health and safety standards to prepare student meals.
The lease agreement has already been approved by the Fire and Rescue Company’s Board and president Garry Legge.
This local partnership also secures significant cost savings for the school division compared to other options considered.
FCPS Superintendent Dr. George Hummer said, “We are incredibly thankful for the partnership and community service demonstrated by the Middletown Volunteer Fire and Rescue Company. This innovative solution, conceived and developed through a cooperative effort between our staff and the volunteer company, ensures our students will continue to receive nutritious, hot meals without interruption.”
